They’ve Paid Their Fair Share

Sharon Jorgenson took issue with a Des Moines Register editorial calling for restoration of the death tax. In response, she details how her and her husband have already paid more than their fair share:
We were both born and raised in the Midwest, one of us by farmers and the other by a military family. We went to college, and paid our way through with summer jobs and part-time jobs on campus. We have worked hard, saved and lived within our means, if not below it.
The editorial board of the Register seems to think the government is entitled to receive part of our hard-earned and saved money when we die as we need to “pay a fair share to support the government.”
We paid our fair share when we earned the money and it was taxed, when we saved our money and the savings account growth was taxed, when we invested the money and it earned dividends. Our estate just didn’t happen; it was planned for, worked and saved for…
